    $1.9 million for 24 songs...

I would say I owe somewheres in the billions, haven't bought a CD since I was 13.

(CNN) -- A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each -- a total of $1.9 million -- for 24 songs.
Illegal downloads of musical files will cost a Minnesota woman $1.9 million, a jury has decided.

Illegal downloads of musical files will cost a Minnesota woman $1.9 million, a jury has decided.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset's case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.

Attorney Joe Sibley said that his client was shocked at fine, noting that the price tag on the songs she downloaded was 99 cents.

She plans to appeal, he said.

Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the RIIA was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable."

"We appreciate the jury's service and that they take this as seriously as we do," she said.

Thomas-Rasset downloaded work by artists such as No Doubt, Linkin Park, Gloria Estefan and Sheryl Crow.

This was the second trial for Thomas-Rasset. The judge ordered a retrial in 2007 after there was an error in the wording of jury instructions.

The fines jumped considerably from the first trial, which granted just $220,000 to the recording companies.

Thomas-Rasset is married with four children and works for an Indian tribe in Minnesota.

Thats way over doing it, the worst they should do is make her buy each CD that the song was released with. Pretty simple if you ask me. haha

It's ridiculous man. My question really is, why choose her? I mean millions of people do that here in the U.S. and they pick her, I want to know which songs she D/L..."Don't Stop Believing" better have been one of them. hah

Way overboard if you ask me.

Did anyone hear about some of the artists wanting radio stations to pay a fee for playing their music?

Sounds like some people are in it for the money.

These guys just don't get it, radio "advertises" for them for free. So does the internet, so does TV. If it weren't for those mediums how would we know who we liked? How would their music get out there? How would some of these acts become insanely popular? They wouldn't. They make enough money from cd sales and concerts....demanding more is ridiculous.

Re: $1.9 million for 24 songs...

everyone is in it for the money or they would have picked something else to earn a living at. the fine was way too much but what she had done was against the law and as another thread on here is about, if you break the law you should pay the price. I to think she should have to purchace the songs she downloaded plus pay a small fee for breaking the law. I stopped downloading when they shut down audiogalaxy and started all the lawsuits. all legit downloading for me now.

Re: $1.9 million for 24 songs...

    these motherfucfkers will never scare me;
this **** is ridiculous, its the interenet, if you are gonna make music and make MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, then its okay for me to download it.

if the woman had recorded the songs of the radio, would she be in trouble??
    nope

and i thought the RIAA has said they arent going after individuals anymore.

songs cost $1.99, she should have been fined roughly $50 for the songs, and whatever else for court costs and such, at the most $1,000, but 1.9 million? its laughable.

guys the trick is stay of kazaa and limewire, those are the way peolpe get caught almost all of the time.

    .
but see, if everyone downloaded free music there would be no music because people couldn't make money and most of the people that would "do it for free" I wouldn't want to hear anyway
